ST. TICHON'S

The appeal made by Mr. E. F. Harris for further support to the St. Tichon's Orphanage deserves sympathetic consideration, It is good that even at a time when every community is feeling acutely the economic strain of an unprecedented. upheaval sponsors can be found to champion the claims of an institution which particularly evokes compassion by reason of the helplessness of the proteges within its wells. There is better reason for insisting on attention to the plea for the Orphanage: it makes a valid contribution to the economic welfare of this city by taking pains to see that children who might otherwise grow up to be a burden on its finances ere, so far as charitable endeavour can compass it, equipped eventually to play their proper part in the civie. life around them. It would be a thousand pities if this Orphanage which has done such useful work as the result of the practical solicitude of residents of Shanghai had to succumb to the ills of the moment, The appeal should therefore meet with generous support.
