Four Japanese naval aircraft wei missing following a violent air combat above the Nanyung aerodrome in Kwangtung on Thursday, during which eight Chinese combat planes out of 12 that took to the air were shot down, a Japanese naval spokesman announced yesterday morning.
Lieut. Shigeru Iwashiro, Commander of the raiding squadron, was slightly wounded.
One large Chinese bomber, three medium-seized bombers, and "four or five" smaller Chinese machines grounded at the field were bombed and destroyed, the spokesman declared. Also destroyed were four hangars, he said.
In addition to air raids on the Foochow, Lungki, Honan, and Lishui, Chekiang, aerodrome attacks were carried out by Japanese naval craft upon the Chihhsien and Yushan fields in Kiangsi, the spokesman revealed. Two grounded machines were destroyed at Lishui, he added. Bombing attacks were also directed at the Canton-Hankow Railway.
