Institutions Affected by Hostilities

At a meeting held on November 5, the Education Board gave consideration to the question of grants-in-aid to Chinese Schools for the third quarter of 1937.

A very comprehensive ana detailed report by the School Medical Officer had been submitted for the information of members on the state of the grant-aided schools.

It was noted that of the 127 schools situated in the Central and Western Districts, the Health Department recommended that 58, which have already completed all Departmental requirements and are classified as satisfactory, should be immediately eligible for the issue of grants-in-aid; that four schools which have only Public Health Department requirements outstanding, and are already engaged in complying therewith, should also be considered eligible for grants: and that two further schools, which have given up their regular prem-isos in the Western District for the purpose of accommodating a Refugee Hospital, and which have reopened in other premises, classified as temporarily satisfactory, should also be permitted to foci grants. It was recommended grants be withheld from the remaining 63 schools situated in the Central and Western Districts. classified as working on various departmental requirements contemplating early removal or definitely known to be closed, It was further noted that the premises of 88 schools were situated in the Northern and Eastern Areas of the Settlement prior to hostilities. The Health Department considered that ten of these schools which were classified as satisfactory prior to the, outbreak of hostilities and whith have either re-opened in other districts in satisfactory new temporary premises, or have established an office with a view to re-opening, or have had some of their pupils admitted to other grant-aided schools, should Be regarded as eligible for the issue of the grant, since they would have been fully qualified in this respect had not hostilities supervened.
