ON PRESS. TALK

Rome, Berlin Not Extending Manchoukuo Recognition The Academy of Sciences in Paris has decided to award the Benjamin Valz prize to Father Burgaud, direc-for of the Time and Magnetism Departments of the Siccawei Observatory.

Alter organizing these two departments, one at Zose Observatory, and the other at Zikawei, Father Bur-gued has been in charge of them for the past five years, and has been exceedingly successful in his work, The magnetism observatory at Zose has become the base of all similar observatories in China, where those engaged in this work, both foreign and Chinese, come to gauge their instruments.

The regularity and precision of this time service, already greatly appreciated by sailors, determined [the choice of the International Astronomical Union of Siccawei as a fundamental longitudinal base. For several years, Father Burgaud completed a magnetic chart of China, and several times previous to the present hostilities he had surveyed the whole of South China, from Shanghai to Yunnanfu, nothing new stations to the south of the Yangtze, or checking over the ones which had formerly been established.

Fifteen Chinese factories, each of which is capitalized at more than $200,000, have reported their damage resulting from the hostilities to the Chamber of Commerce to be forwarded to the Ministry of Industries.

Of these, the Mayor Silk Mills alone, one of the largest Chinese companies for the manufacture and export of silk piece goods here, suffered a damage of $1,251,000, the heaviest among the group.

The Mei Foo Silk Mills, another silk weaving concern, come next with $640,000 losses. The damage to the Tien Ili Ve Mo Factory, manufacturers of gourmet powder and sauce, is estimated at $174,071.
