"Pipes must not be smoked when passing a sentry. This was the gist of the remarks and gesticulations made by what appeared to-be a Japanese petty officer on the Garden Bridge yesterday io a foreign new: paper representative. The correspondent was smoking a pipe when he left the Japanese press conference in the Broadway Mansions yesterday morning, and continued to puff contentedly at it as he crossed ihe Garden Bridge onto the Bund.
Just before he reached the Japanese sentry in the middle of: the bridge, a Japanese naval officer rushed up, touched the pipe, waved at the sentry and shook both hands and his head. Being in a hurry to reach his office and, therefore, not being disposed to argue the point, the correspondent removed his pipe just as he passed the Japanese sentry. The Russian Detachment sentry on duty a yard or two down the road ignored the pipe completely as it passed him, in the correspondent's mouth ence more.
