We notice from the Municipal Minutes that it is proposed to raise the licence fee on carriages plying for hire to $150 for 4-wheeled and 75 cents for 2-wheeled vehicles. We trust that rules restricting the number of pas-Sengers by any one conveyance will also be enforced; at present, ponies are Sometimes cruelly overload:
We learn from the "Shenpao" that the Kai-ping mining company, the prospectus of which was summarized in our columns a few weeks since, will Commence opera! almost immediately. The requisite machinery has arrived in Shanghai from Europe, and 7,000 out of the 8,000 shares placed upon the market have been taken up. It is expected that the remainder will shortly be disposed of. The "Shenpao" speaks very hopefully of the undertaking, for which it predicts rapid success, and strongly recommends the purchase of shares; adding, somewhat, significantly, that the enterprise, that under Government auspices, is purely a commercial one.
