New York, Mar. 19.
Without revealing the method contemplated, Mr. William Farish, president of the Standard Oil Ca. of New Jersey, announced here to-day that American oil companies would fight the expropriation of foreign owned oil companies in Mexico.
He indicated the American companies would appeal to Washington for official action. The American Desperadoes Responsible for $200,000 Loss Bringing to a successful conclusion a brilliant series of swift raids which have roped in 57 men and nineteen pistols, in addition to a quantity of ammunition, Settlement detectives from Central Police Station handcuffed three men in Hankow Road early yesterday morning. Leading the posse of detectives were Detective Inspector A, Telfer and Detective Sub-Inspector J. J. Ross, both of whom have been hot on the tracks of the armed gang since the grim chase began, and have been mainly responsible for the successful - coups which resulted in the entire gang being put safely behind iron bars.
Chinese residents of the Settlement and Concession have reason. to heave sighs of relief that these 57 dangerous characters will menace them no more. The gang has been carrying out armed robberies and other forms of crime in the foreign areas for a considerable period, and their total haul is said to be in the neighbourhood jof $200,000.
As is customary in cases of this nature, where the gang use both the Settlement and the Concession as bases of operations, the police of both municipalities have been cooperating closely in the rounding up of the law-breakers, and it is no small measure due to the. assistance given to the Settlement men by the French Police, under Chief Inspec-for Henri, that the activities of th dangerous gang are now concluded once and for all.
