Pincer Movement Forces 35,000 Republican Troops To Withdraw Near Saragossa; Madrid Bombarded

Hendaye, Mar. 24.

Thirty-five thousand Republican troops were retreating from a deep salient within eighteen miles of Sara-gesso to-day hoping to escape a Nationalist pincer movement, the Nationalists reported.

Gen, Fancisco Franco is anxious to eradicate the salient as its nose lies more than sixty miles behind the Nationalist spearhead constituting a constant threat to the rear wings.

Successful crossing of the Ebro River by Nationalists yesterday straightened the lines to permit flanking attacks on Republicans on a 180-mile front from the Ebro River north to the Pyrenees.

With the capture of Tardienta, thirteen miles south of Huesca, the Nationalist pincer drive tightened today, paving the way for a drive to the Mediterranean coast On the Aragon front 400 Republicans were killed in a single position at Casa Zanares.
