The encounter between the Amerks and the Blueshirts was the first of the series of three tussles between the teams to have finished second in the recently completed National Hockey League. The Amerks finished second in the Canadian Division and the Rangers in the American class. They will meet again to-morrow night at the Madison Square Garden, home rink of both squads.
The Canadiens, who were edged out by the Amerks, will also meet the Black Hawks to-morrow in the second tilt of their series of three contests to see which of the two third teams will meet the ultimate victor of the second-team series.
Favoured to score an easy victory, the Flying Frenchmen of Montreal were held to a 4-4 deadlock by a stout-heared, fast-moving Chicago squad for three quarters. But the Canadiens broke out their flying skates in the final period to send the puck in for two goals and victory.
The Americans and the Rangers, traditional rivals, fought a' bitter battle marked by rough play and plenty of furious body-checking which also sent tempers soaring.
