According to a statement issued by Lieutenant-General K. Hayashi, the Japanese Gendarmerie arrested about 200 people who were suspected of illegitimate speculation in Canton's various monetary units, but were released after examination and were warned of the consequences of any further manipulation in the exchange.
"The authorities went to the extent of inviting all representatives of city money changers to the Headquarters of the Gendarmerie, asking them for their ce-operation in order to bring about normal circulation of currency," added the statement.
