Successful Mopping-up

To suppress the activities of disorganized bands of Chinese troops the Japanese started mopping-up operations on January 14 at Chu-hsien, and these proved so successful that the town has been cleared almost completely of disturbers of the peace.

The population of Yangchow, which has been famous from ancient times as a centre of Chinese culture, stood at about 10000 when the Japanese troops marched into the picturesque city; since when it has soared to 40,000.

On December 10 a Peace Preservation Commission was organized and two days later electric service was restored. At the same time regular ferry service between Yangchow and Chinkiang on the northern bank of the Yangtze was started.

The motor road linking Pukow and Yangchow is being used by Japanese troops.
