Of the twelve mixed hunts held, six lightweights on 'Ys' have been first past the post and six heavyweights on 'Zs', whilst the heavyweight prize has been gained on five occasions.
'Xs' and open hunts continued for several. sensóns and then a change became necessary. Riders complained that they had good "Y" ponies—frst class hunters—which, on the run-in, had no chance with fourteen hand 'Zs.' Moreover the 'Zs.' showed, once they arrived in Sh hai, amazing growing propensities and although the limit was set at fourteen hands it was soon found that this was constantly exceeded.
Paperhunting being essentially a sport where the price of success is glory, not financial gain, it would have savoured of meanness to ha ordered that owners of overheight ponies should not be allowed to hunt them. Instead, rules were "devised to prevent the same thing happening in the future and under the expert advice of the Club's Oficial Measurers the 'Life Certificate' came into existence. Nowadays anyone buying a 'Z' without a Life Certificate does so with his eyes open. The pony has to be remeasured every year until he reaches the age after which it is improbable that he will grow. He is then given a Life Certificate. Once this is obtained, stating the pony's height as not exceeding fourteen hands (fractions in favour), he is safe ior life, even if, as it is said ocean sionally does happen, he should grow a little more.
The following statistics suggest that the mixed hunt is a very fair one both for heavyweights and lightweights:—
