Canton, Feb. 2.
Food control im Kwengtung hes been placed on a wartime basis under a special Food Commission with General Wu Te-chen, Governor of the province, as chairman.
The object of the Commission is to ce-ordinate the activities of the various provincial agencies which have been engaged in food control work, Bach phase in the production and distribution of food is handled by a separate department, They are food production, reclamation, food transportation, grahaties, co-opera tives, loans and food economy.
The first big task of the Commission is to make arrangements for transporting surplus rice from Hunan and Kwangsi and storing it in various parts of Kwangtung to meet the demands for the next six or seven months. Negotiations are in progress with the South-China Rice Corporation for the handling and distribution of both native and imported rice, and a chain of granaries is to be built for storage purposes.
Efforts are being made to introduce other food crops, such as taro, sweet po‹aќo and beans, in order to relieve the shortage of rice. Retail rice shops in Canton have been ordered to sell these miscellaneous food crops as well as rice, and it is stipulated that every buyer should be made to take ten cents worth of other foods for every dollar's worth of rice he buys. It is hoped by these measures to accustom the people to eating other foods instead of depending on rice alone.—Reuter.
