Programme on Sunday

Outstanding on the programme of the. orchestra..on.- Sunday was Malipiero's Elegiac Symphony, a personal work of simple and beautiful dimensions... Malipiero. is master enough of his craft, but the unaffected manner in which the essence of his deep feeling in this symphony is communicated determines the sincerity of the whole. The Orchestra voiced its sentiments with delicacy and understanding.

Two compositions. of two great masters of the second Venetian school (17th century) received their first performance in Shanghai. A recital tive and scene from Marcello's cantata "Didone" were sung by Miss Mary Stewart Her voice was as satisfying as eyer.

Mr. Foa, with the expert help of the strings of the orchestra which carried the main weight of the edifice, played two sections of the "Four Seasons" concerto of Vivaldi in his best manner. The arrangement of the work is by Molinary, the famous conductor-violinist, which accounts for the fine-pointedness of the string tutti, and the gratifying sonority of the whole.
