Wounded When Grappling

With Gangsters

The owner of a Chinese exchange shop was shot and seriously wounded last night during the course of an armed robbery at his establishment in Ferry Road as he attempted, with the aid of assistants, to grapple with an armed gang. About ten minutes later during another robbery in Taku Road several shots were fired by robbers but no one was injured.

The first robbery occurred shortly after 10 pin. when an unknown number of Chinese forced their way into the exchange shop, where the owner and his assistants were caught unprepared. Ransacking the shop as an armed member of the party herded the inmates into a corner, the gang was surprised by the owner ds he made a dive towards them.

No sooner had the owner made this move when he was shot down by the armed member of the gang, all of whom fled as several of the shop assistant made their escape to raise the alarm. When the police arrived on the scene the gang had disappeared and the injured man was taken to hospital where his condition was said to be serious.

In the second armed robbery, which occurred at House 69, Lane 606 Teku Road, five men, two of whom were armed, entered the premises but were disturbed when one inmate managed to raise an alarm. Firing several shots to deter pursuers, the gang managed to effect an escape nothing was stolen.
