Vancouver, May 29.
The Chinese population of Vancouver joined in welcoming King George and Queen Elizabeth when the Royal couple, completing a coast-to-coast journey across Canada of about 3,000 miles in just over ten days, arrived here today.
The city's large Chinatown was gay with Union Jacks, which were flown alongside Chinese symbols expressing hopes for peace.
No less than half a million people turned out to greet Their Majesties, including thousands of Americans from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California.
Vancouver's large British colony turned out en masse to give the King and Queen a rousing welcome. Sections of the crowd bore banners indicating their place of origin, some being inscribed Yorkshire, East Anglia and Lancashire.
The King wore the uniform of a Marshal of the Royal Air Force as a tribute to Vancouver's importance as a Pacific air force centre.
After being received in the City Hall by the Socialist Mayor, Their Majesties drove round the city. Crowds, which had awaited their coming all night, gave them an enthusiastic reception.—Reuter,
