Scrubbing the Gas

Members of the Engineering Society of China were told yesterday evening of the methods used in the preparation of gas for the city of Shanghai, and they must have been gratified (o learn that the most up-to-date professes are in vogue. Before the consumer uses his gas in this port, it is "scrubbed." Doubtless, to engineers this "scrubbing" is a part of the work with which one and all are familiar. The cleanliness of engineers is proverbial the world over, But to the layman who reads the very Interesting address given by Mr. A. MIN. Stickels, the question may be pardoned: how does one scrub gas? Tt sounds rather like scrubbing the Invisible man of Mr. H. G. Wells' creation. It perhaps fortunate for the general public, in a country where the laws of strict sanitation are so essential to public health, that the gas consumed in the average household is Jer. Otherwise "missy" might find herself faced with another real" problem of housewifery.

Have wash, "Ah, missy, no can, Gas no can find." And there the housewife is. [The family must take its chance that day with funserubbed gas, and what the results might be fare almost too terrible to imagine. In future, the [Shanghailander must pause with' respect when his geyser or gas-fire goes off with a pop. For occasionally gas is scrubbed in mineral all, and who does not know the resentment of the average healthy dog when It has been scrubbed with too stringent solutions to cure him from scratching. The pop or explosion " ply be the result fof the indignation felt by Mr. Therm or one of his descendants over too much elbow grease from one of the efcient rubbers sri the: gas-

Persistent Lying Some weeks ago, in this column, reference was made to the fact that the official German Mews axeney sent out the story about British sailors spitting and throwing a dog into the Hurave of the Germans killed inthe Admiral IGrat Spee, when the opinion was expressed that the story was subsequently "killed" because even the Germans could not be expected to stomach such a story in South America. That did not prevent the yarn being disseminated in other arters of ihe world as the following from the organ of the BBC, which Histens into German broadcasting, as well. as emitting its own, will plainly: sh of the British Ment out this Into the grave.

'This Hem of news' wa Middle East at halepastcfours and in French Arabic for the: Near "ast

"The British wireless the said) goes so far assert that we tried to make propaganda Deside the open graves of dead sailors, with 'We are' only too glad to leave abuse of this kind' to you.

To anybody who did thine' that the British Wireless was "Unreliable, JThus, white the "killing" of the story for the JSouth "Americar press might have served to convince editors in that part of the world of the scrupulous truthfulness of the German pro~ Jpaganda machine, the fact is that the same Joutrageous story' was broadcast in various Hianguages, other, apparently than English, for the purpose of discrediting the British in the leyes of people less well informed. It is all far too clover, for these things eventually come to Hight, and' serve to convince neutrals that the lonly' outstanding quality of the German propaganda is a quite remarkable virtuosity in lying. And that is not confined to German loroadeast stations operating in Germany!

Indirect Admission The nows that the German government for tne second time has refused the Papal Nunc fo. Germany permission to. visit. German. cupied Polish territory is interesting and highly significant. The request was made, itis Feported, Jon instructions of the Popal Secretary of State, ena taken in conjunction with recent happening Between the Vatican and the Reich is pregnant with: meaning. It will be remembered that. a foroadeast from the Vatican regarding the evil manner in which Germans were treating the Poles aroused. indignant denials. and. protests from Berlin, and. subsequent broadcasts which hod' been. pianned were discontinued. A more tigninied method of securing the required mission that things are not. ft for the Papal INunefo to see in Poland could not have been obtained, and this the second refusal of permission to visit the areas Ju question can'in the eyes of the rest of the world have but) one meaning. 'That must. obviously be that the stories of brutality infieted upon the Poles are rue in substance' and in fact, that. the Teich realizes it, but thinks that by' Keeping. such a fan out of the occupied areas as Monsignor JOrsenigo the absence of his testimony will assist fin furthering the tying denials which the Reich has been constantly uttering. 'The reports which have come out of Poland during recent months fare 10 the effect that the conquered Poles are cing' subjected to the greatest. brutality and that an organized attempt is being made to wine Jout the people and their culture. If there were nothing in' Poland of which the Reich was ashamed there could be no earthly reason why. the Papal Nuncto should not have been allowed to-go and see for himself. The fact that he was refused permission can only' lead to one confusion, and. that that the reports which have feaked out of ite occupied territories are just lag tue as the hall mark of the Vatican 20 clearly stamped them.
