The feverish voting activity which had been so noticeable in Shanghai on Wednesday had yesterday subsided. to a state of tense expectancy as practically every resident of the Into national Settlement, and even Outside the Settlement, awaited the outcome of the most critical elections ever to take place in Shanghai, if not the Far East.
Tt was estimated that over 60 per cent, of the ratepayers entitled to do }so voted on Wednesday and const Jquently there was very little excite ment at the polls. No queues of people waited in line to vote, esterday all day lon, [Drill Halt and the Hongkew Local campaign committees were no less active yesterday than they been during the previous days and eligible voters who had not east their ballots on Wednesday were exhorted to do so yesterday. As to be expected there was a last minute rush of voters at the two polis to beat the 3 pin. deadline.
The only thing out of the ordinary which occurred during the voting, was the mishap which befell a member of Shanghai Municipal Police when a ballot box fell on his face fas he was trying to place it against the wall. He suffered a slight cut above his eye and had to retire. for minor first ald treatment. Dufing, their spare moments yesterday, the scrutineers avidly seanned local newspapers for news of the stirring events in' Europe. which tended to dwarf even the elections.
As the hour of final reckoning drow near early. this morning the. ofice of "North-China Daily News" was deluged with telephone calls. from. anxious hundreds who had determined to remain up unfit the final ro-ulls were revealed. Speculation was Fife in Shanghai last night as to the Outcome of the voting and on. the whole there appeared to be a feeling, confidence among foreign residents that the status quo would be maintained.
