Locally, with a season already started late and further interrupted by weather conditions, we have a state of affairs in which both players and ponies are really only about three-quarters fit for the speed the game should have attained by the middle of June.
The result is that the minor liberties taken with the Rules in the very early and extremely schooling chukkers in the opening practice game: in which the services of an ump were not always at hand, are apt to be repeated as a habit when the pace is improved as the season advances, much to the detriment of the p unless checked by the efforts of 1. Public Enemy."
For no-one will gainsay that reckless play disregarded or foul play overlooked has any effect other than to slow down the game, the one thing which makes polo uninteresting. As the sea-serpent raises its head from the ocean every summer season so has the bote noire of both player and umpires alike raised its hoary cranium on the polo ground. I refer Played Today The deluge of the past week does not appear to have prevefited all play this week-end. In fact, if there is to be no further rain, as would appear to be the case at the time of writing, it is possible that greens will be available for play today. Yesterday they were drying rapidly.
Players, and particularly the entrants to the Pairs Championships. are therefore reminded that accordingly to the rules of the Association the first round of this competition is due to be completed today and are strongly advised to make the necessary arrangements to avoid.overstepping the time limit.
