Chungking, June 21 In the process of breaking up an alleged Japanese spy ring operating on the Yangtze, some four or five persons have been shot in Chungking since the outbreak of hostilities, and a large number of others have received lesser sentences, Reuter learns on good authority.
Most of the persons arrested are sleted to have been either ignorant of the true purpose of their activi-lies or else were driven to act as the tool of others by destitution. It is further stated that most of them were not natives of this province.
There is a small ex-Japanese concession at Chungking. It is alleged that before fighting broke out there was much unobtrusive Japanese activity in this area, apparently sowing the seeds of the present unearthed espionage.—Reuter. 3
