One of the features in connection with the sinking of the Thetis which cannot be allowed to pass unmentioned is the sympathy which has been expressed with Great Britain in this tragedy by the press of other countries, and most notably that of Germany, where regrets are reported to have been expressed not only by the newspapers but by the German people themselves. It is one of the redeeming qualities of mankind that it can at times sympathize with the other fellow, and the expressions which it is reported have been carried in such journals as the "Deutsche Algemeine Zeitung," the "Boersen Zeitung" and the "Volkischer Beobachter" will be read by Britons with the keennest appreciation. They will be touched by these expressions of sympathy as probably by nothing else, and it will do much to mollify those hard feelings which are generated not by racial hatreds but rather by factors which are not wholly within the control of any one particular nation. These expressions of sympathy are in line with the tributes which officials visiting the capitals of the various countries in Europe pay at the shrines of their unknown soldiers, whether they were enemies or not. They are tributes to the men who gave all that they could for their own people, and this spontaneous express sion of sympathy which is reported from Germany will rouse a friendly response in many a British heart. There are people both in Germany as in Great Britain who would like to see something more akin to friendship between the two countries. The people can visualize, and thousands of them are disposed to amity and a real liking, and it is no fault of theirs that better relations do not exist between them. Can it not even now be hoped that the day will come when the people of Great Britain and Germany, nay of the whole world, will come together in a closer harmony than has ever existed before? That the desire for such a thing exists is all too apparent, but yet there is missing that touch of genius which would make it a possibility.
