To the Editor of the "Mobrh-Chimn Dairy NEWS"
Sm,—Your correspondent "PARVUS Mixob" appears to have rushed in print with a statement which will hardly bear investigation.
The Welch Regiment left Shanghai eleven years ago, and if it were found that the team which lost at Llanelly $9—nil was from the same battalion, it is almost certain that the personnel of the side has completely changed since that time. I understand that the battalion of the Welch Regiment which was here in 1927, went on to India where they won the biggest tournament of the year 1928, notably the Calcutta Cup.
The writer is a member of one of the oldest rugger clubs in England and has been active in the game for Over twenty years and is of the opinion that in the past ten years Shanghai has produced representative siders which would give a good game to any first class side at home. In the season 1931-32 Shanghai defeated a strong United Services side by 31—0 and in a game against His Majesty Navy emerged victorious 32—3. Their opponents were particularly well represented as the Defence Force had been considerably augmented owing to the 1932 incident.
Players of the calibre of McLaren (a Scottish International), Dunkl Currie, Nicholl, Younger, Gubb. Wales, Fowler and Bramble have all played first class rugger at home and the indomitable Billy Neil has invariably held his own in competition with the Internationals, Selby of Scotland and Wharton of England.
