Substitute Starter

The Club's starter was unable to start races owing to illness and his gratulate Hill-—or affectionately known to everyone connected with racing—for the despatch and efficiency with which he got his fields away.

There were two important races on the programme—the ninth and tenth—and whilst the second produced a terrific finish, the first was won very easily by Frostylight, the. hottest favourite of the afternoon—the only first favourite, incidentally, to prove specessful, with the exception of Cherrybey in the Novice Race, who was à little more favoured in the betting than Harpylight and Artimid. Proceedings opened with the steeplechase, in which there were six start-ets, This was a good race to watch and the crowd had a thrill when two ponies fell at the' grandstand wall.

Blue Ridge. 11 was prominent throughout, Morgan immediately taking the lead, followed by White Whiskers and Port Brandda (Leaping Morn), this order being maintained until the Natural, where Port Bradda moved up, only to drop back again at the Monument where White Whiskers outjumped him. His mistake at the Monument probably unsettled him for he fell at the next gg wall, Airplane also coming down. Luckily neither jockey (Chancellor or White) was: hurt.

White Major. who had been lying last, moved up at Dallas, King's Jubilee falling back at the Polo Ground Water where he made a mistake, Up till this point the race looked to be rather slowly run, but speed was put'on once they had jumped the Natural the second time And they bore down on the Monument as fast as they could go, White Whiskers taking the lead there to go on to win by two lengths.
