London, May 17. What about the London Season of 1939?

"Not at all bad.

Of course there are modifications, but after all these are non-essentials, and life is very much as it always is. The absence of the King and Queen will obviously affect a purely social season, but I don't think it will make much difference to the normal happenings. What will make most difference is the weather, and during the month of May, to date, it has been pretty poor—cold and wet.

Racing has hech good this season, and the Derby next week, despite the absence of the King and Queen, should draw the usual crowd, though there is no horse which strikes the popular imagination. The outlook for Ascot is very much the' same. People have applied for tickets for the Royal Enclosure on a pretty wholesale scale, which will be good for the West End—which I admit needs help, because all the luxury trades have been doing poorly.
