Sword of Damocles

Of course the shadow of AHP. and National Service and military training is over all but it doesn't depress anybody. We are getting quite accustomed to it, Everything is doing well. Britain now has 2,400,000 National Service recruits and only half a million more are wanted. There is to be a big review staged in Hyde Park, and 20,000 national service volunteers will march past, The Military Training Bill is through the House and the dates to remember are Registration of all men beween 20 and 21 June 3 Medical examination will begin June 8 First group to be called up will receive notices July 1 These men will report to units July 15

Subsequent groups will be called up at intervals of two months, the oldest first and the youngest last. First group of Territorial A.A. Units will be called up to report on June li.

If we don't know all about evacuation and billeting it will not be the fault of the authorities. Heavy penalties will await "gatecrashers" who try to smuggle themselves out of London under the evacuation nobody is going to buy them with such a heavy cost on top of their normal running charges. I do not think it will make much difference to the small car. There are more cars than ever on the roads, and the traffic jams are terrible, even early in May. The number of persons killed and injured on the roads last month shows a big increase compared with March. According to a return issued recently by the Ministry of Transport 513 people were killed last month, and 18,079 injured, compared with 457 killed and 15,850 injured in March, and 509 killed and 18,120 injured in April, 1928.

Thefts of cars are getting more and more numerous, and it is never safe to leave a new car unattended in the street. Criminals now use these cars for assistance in their robberies, which, so far as the ravinees are concerned, are usually engineered from London. A mobile column of special constables driving their own fast cars —some of them capable of 100 mp.h—are London's latest shock troops against criminals. It is a common sight now to see uniformed special constables helping the regular police in routine duties, but it is only in the last few weeks that "specials" have worked with Scotland Yard detectives to catch thiev and housebreaker:

Finally I mention that countryside as whole is waking up.

Crowds of people are migrating in view of the possibility of aerial war-at any time of the day. fare. The old de-natural-coloured straw serted country houses are being reoccupied, and it is very dificult to get a cottage of any sort. I wonder whether caravanning will be allowed if war comes? Meantime there is a slump in house property in London. Every street in the West End has boards up "To Let" or "For Sale."
