Scoring at almost two-runs-a-minute on their own ground yesterday evening in the first innings of a two-day game, a Recs' XI knocked up the commanding total of 151 against the Public & Thomas Hanbury School and placed themselves in a fairly safe position, it being most improbable that the schoolboys will pass this score in the time available for play this afternoon.
Mainly responsible for this very useful total were Inwood, who batted quite well for fifty and then retired, Murray, who wielded the long handle to good effect to mark up 34 in short order and Mr. Extras, who added no less than 20 to the already high total The first two Recs' wickets were down for only 11, but Inwood and Brodd quickly improved the position. The latter left at 36 while Pate soon followed. Then Zhwood and Murray came together and a spate of heavy hitting was witnessed by the large crowd on hand. Murray hit out at everything pitched up to him and though he was rather lucky at periods during his innings, the ball missing his wicket by the merest of fractions when he knew absolutely nothing about the balls beating him, he played bright and entertaining cricket, being particularly severe on MacCorkindale. He and his partner added 56 for the fifth wicket of which he secured 34, including five fours.
Inwood was also in good form and although he took a trifle longer about making his runs, he was responsible for wearing down the attack, and after scoring fifty, which included seven boundary, hits, retired 'The schoolboys' bowling was inclined to become ragged towards the end of the innings, far too many balls being over-pitched, but their fielding was, in the main. very good indeed, the manner in which the youngsters gathered the ground-balls being most satisfactory.
The scholars bat this afternoon, but the task of securing 152 runs to win may be a little too much for them A Rees' XI
