Ideal Surroundings

Capt. Osawa said it was "almost a pity" to land aeroplanes on the fields near the scene bf the fighting at Nomonhan, east of Lake Buir, as these were covered with flowers.

The climate was moderate, with the temperature lingering around 63 degrees, although it got chilly at night, One air combat, he continued, took place in daylight at 9 o'clock in the evening.

The area was populated by Mongols who roamed about with thousands Of sheep and horses as their only possessions, "Except for an occasional lama temple, there is nothing on the plains as far as the eye can see," Capt. Osawa added, "Because of hot springs, the water does not freeze even in the winter."

It was among such surroundings that the air battle, with 100 aircraft participating, was staged, Capt. Osawa declared.—Domei.
