Canton, May 13.
Several minor riots have occurred here during the past few days, caused by the high price of rice. The shortage of rice and other commodities in Canton is now acutely felt. This, coupled with the latest depreciation of the National currency, has resulted in soaring prices.
An officio] of the local regime stated that it was hoped the situation would only be temporary, as the authorities have purchased large supplies of rice, which are now in Hongkong and Macao, awaiting transport facilities.—Reuter, Submarine Seal Feared Lost in Action London, May 13.
The British submarine Seal, which, according to an Admiralty communique, must be presumed lost, was commanded by Lt.-Commander R. P. Lonsdale, who was mentioned in di patches a few days ago. His wife died in September, 1937, leaving an infant son.
Foreign reports suggest that some of the crew of the Seal may be prisoners.—Reuter.
