Some Uncontrolled Soldiers

A troublesome fly in the ointment is the apparent inability of the Japanese supreme command to answer for the good behaviour of all its troops. Some Japanese units maintain the best traditions of discipline and conduct, Notably the regiments charged to clear Pootung were humane, considerate and friendly, Those who occupied Chapei, and later, Hungjao, were sadly different, as recent cables have admitted. In fact, long before the Chinese were put to flight, Japanese soldiers, had been responsible for some sorry work in Yangtszepoo, Reticerice was observed in the interests of other potential victims and, perhaps, for less repute able reasons, It is hoped that before long, impressed by the effect of the revelations from Nanking, the Japanese authorities will be able to bring their delinquents to heel, Visiting a Chinese occupied area just before I left Shanghai in December, I was struck by the cheery way in which a Japanese sentry was playing with some Chinese children, I drew attention to it but my foreign guide shook his head. "This regiment is all right," he said, "but it is quite on the cards that another will come along and if those children think they can play with the sentry then they may have a rude shock."
