Works Committee Holds First Meeting

Sale of Gasoline Stations

Approved The frst meeting of the Works Committee of the S.M.C. for the municipal year 1940/1941 was held on May 10, 1940, when Mr. G. E. Mitchell was elected Chairman of the Committee. The membership of the Committee is as follows:—Messrs. W. Gockson, G. A. Haley, F. J. Hookham, Yulin Hsi, P. C. Hu, K. Kuroda, W. J. Lee, G. E. Marden, G. E. Mitchell, and K. Watanabe.

The Committee recommended and the Council agreed that the offer received from the Standard-Vacuum Oil Company to purchase the reversion in two gasoline filling station sites on Great Western and Vu Yuen Road, at present leased to them by the Council, for a sum of U.S.$1,76640, be accepted.

Sites Leased in 1927 and 1928

The sites in question were leased to the company in 1927 and 1928, and both sites have been really developed by the company with permanent roads and buildings. As the present leases do not expire until 1948, it was not possible to call for tenders for the sale of these sites. Since the company's offer was regarded as a good one, the Committee considered its acceptance justified.

Consideration was given to a letter received by the Council from the China Realty Ca. requesting that the proposed extension of Liangshan Road north of Point Road be abandoned.
