The unanimous protest made by the American republics against the Nazi aggression on Holland and Belgium should recall the fact that, in modern "total" war, words can sometimes be as effective as bullets. To the many Germans who listened in secretly to the broadcast news of this protest, there must have come grave doubt of the truth of the news with which they have been fed by Dr. Goebbels' machine. Why, they must have asked themselves, should nearly the whole world condemn German aggression if the Nazi case is as good as Dr. Goebbels has tried to make out? If it were proved, as the Nazis claimed, that Britain and France designed to attack the Reich through the Low Countrie: why should it be necessary for the whole of the western hemisphere to condemn Germany's moves to forestall such an Allied attack "an unjustifiable and cruel violation by Germany of the neutrality and sovereignty" of the states in question? To these questions the Nazis can, of course, give no truthful answer They had no reason for the attack, and th flimsiness of their excuses is too apparent.
