Trams Going Back To Hongkew

Depot Used for Overhaul Public Service Ideal of

Company Another welcome indication of the return to normal conditions in Shanghai is provided by the announcement that starting this morning the Shanghai Tramways will commence sending six trams daily to their depot at the corner of Whashing-Baikal Roads, in the Japanese-controlled area of Shanghai, for overhaul.

Since the outbreak of hostilities the Shanghai Tramways activities have been confined to the area this side of Soochow Creek, although in normal times the other depot was used for overhauling. purposes. The "North-China Daily News" learns that from to-day the Japanese authorities are permitting the despatch of this number of trams, which coincides with the normal requirements of the company, thereby removing the strain from the Bubbling Well depot While this is acknowledged a welcome concession, the hope is entertained that the Shanghai Tramways will be permitted to operate in the area north of Soochow Creek. At present, thousands of Chinese are working in that district and it is believed possible that by operating a private service as far as the Shanghai Tramways is concerned, in the near future it will be possible to operate a public service which will take care of the increasing passenger service contingent on more liberal conditions in this area under Japanese control.
