Johnson Hire Car

Bandits Commandeer — Return Vehicle When Motor Fails to Start; $5 Fare

Detectives at Bubbling Well police station were faced with their second mysterious hire car hold up in two days when a Johnson car, license No. 18577, was commandeered by a band of six men, one armed with a pistol, in Tunsin Road at 1135 am. yesterday. The car was returned to the when the men were unable to start the motor and the gang decamped.

Two men ordered the car at the Johnson garage at 1493 Vu Yuen Road and told the driver to proceed io Tunsin Road. When the car neared the Ascot Riding School the men told the chauffeur to stop and when he did so, four other men approached the car. One of these men appeared to be armed with a pistol and the chauffeur was ordered out of the car and taken to a straw hut in Pu Ka Foo village.

The chauffeur was relieved of his cap and uniform and while one man guarded the driver the other five got into the car. The man at the wheel, in his anxiety to get away, over-flooded the carburetter and the motor failed to operate.

The mop returned the uniform to the chauffeur, gave him $5 to cover the fare for hiring the vehicle and then made their getaway.
