To the Editor of the "Normanna Dany News"
Having come across the question of superimposed explanatory foot-notes on films in the corres~ pondence columns of your esteemed paper yesterday, I should like to put in my two bits on the subject, speaking asa Chinese, and, I dare say, for a greater part of the Chinese theatre-goers.
'My wife does not understand the English language very well, but she His crazy about American films, as any young woman would be. Ever since the introduction of these footnotes, I have found it a greater pleasure to: take her to see. the' pictures than before, because I don't have to do any" more "interpreting" for her we watch the progress of the story. That is a relief not only to myself, but to the others who happen to sit near by us as well.
'As far as I know, the Chinese like the superimposed footnotes, and hope: to find them on every film. I heartily agree with the writer of the previous' jetter on the subject that. these footnotes äre necessary to the greater part of the Shanghai theatre patrons. Only, as Fum Fan wrote, "keep them neat, concise and at the bottom of the screen, when no one could reasonably complain," Follow the good examples set by the Fox and RKO pictures.
