Lords Debate Mexican Oil Expropriations

Government Watching Over British Interests

London, Mar. 31.

The question of the Mexican Government's expropriation of British and American oil fields was raised yesterday in the House of Lords.

The Earl of Plymouth, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, said that it was most regrettable that the representations of the British Government had proved in vain and, despite the untiring efforts of the companies to find a compromise solution, the Mexican Government had chosen the course of expropriation.

He added that he was unable officially to confirm the press report that the United States had sent a stern Note to the Mexican Government. He assured the House, however, that the Government had been in contact with the United States Government in connection with the matter, and he emphasized that the British Government was fully alive to the seriousness of the position—Reuter.
