Case Against American Woman Concluded

Judgment to Be Given ins Court for China To-day

Judgment me the action against Mrs. Katherine De Salas was reserved by Judge Milton J. Helmick in the U.S. Court for China yesterday until 10 a.m. to-day.

The defendant was charged with larceny by trick, it being alleged by the prosecution that she issued worthless cheques for goods obtained from shops in Shanghai before her departure for Japan.

Mr. Leighton Shields, District Attorney, had the defendant escorted back from Japan by Mr. Arthur Peterson. Deputy Marshal. She gave a U.S.$500 bond after she had been put under arrest in the District Attorney's office on her return to Shanghai, Mr, C. S. Franklin, in summing up the case for the defence, said Mrs. De Salas had bought the goods for her sister, from whom she had expected to get the money, which did come. Before her departure, she had given the power of attorney to Mr. Roy G. Allman to take care of her matters, such as the post-dated cheques she had issued. The defendant, Mr. Franklin continued, came from a good family and had a moderate income. She had every intention to pay for the goods she had obtained, he said.

Mr. Leighton Shields also summed up his case, saying that it was with reluctance that he had to bring action against the defendant. The intention of the defendant, lip said, was to defeat the collection of chits she had left behind.
