Of yesterday's swimming, Mrs. Johnston gave easily the most impressive showing. She took a good lead from the start and was well ahead of the others in having about two yards advantage at the end of the first length. Her turn was magnificent and she gained at least a yard on this, going on with a strong finish to win handsomely by about five yards. It is expected she will either equal or break the local record in the final.
In the other heat, some close swimming was seen with Miss Peach showing up: well in the first length, and Miss Clifton coming up strongly in the second. The latter showed a stronger finish and was able to displace her opponent by a narrow margin, while Miss Dodd had a bad turn and was slightly behind her opponents.
In the junior boys 100 yards, Hekking and Figueredo had a thrilling struggle all the way up the course the former revealing better stamina and being able to complete the distance in better style, thereby getting the decision by a touch. The other heat saw Lumsdaine setting the pace for the first. two. length, and being well in the running until the last half of the final lap when Pure went out ahead to win handsomely.
