In reality, as the official comment hinted, the figures for April are not comparable with those of March or any other preceding month, because those for March concerned only the Old Reich and Sudetenland. The foreign trade of Austria—an integral part of the Reich—was left out of account, but for the first time it is included in the April figures.
In March trade between Germany and Memel and Germany and Czechoslavakia was foreign, but whereas in the case of Memel the customs frontier was abolished in March, so that this trade became domestic, the customs frontier between the Reich and Bohemia-Moravia—now known as the Protectorate—still existed and all trade was recorded statistically.
But as the Protectorate is now economically an integral part of the Reich this trade is no longer "foreign."
