German planes staged four raids on city shortly after dawn yesterday but failed to hit any important military objectives.
There were a few civilian casuals ties, including several women and children. Four German bombers were believed to have been shot down. They bombed from a great height and heavy anti-aircraft fire prevented them from engaging in dive bombing.
The first raid followed an air raid warning sounded at 6.55 am. The three other raids followed at twenty minute intervals. The first German planes appeared off the coast at 7 a.m, and brought anti-aircraft guns into action immediately.
During the first raid all the German bombs dropped into the sea while the majority of bombs in succeeding raids also dropped in the sea. Only three bombs were known to have hit on land.—United Press.
