Sergeant Wins D.C.M. for Holding Post Two Hours In Tank Attack

London, June 16.

Irish Guards and Royal Irish Fusiliers figure prominently in the latest list of immediate awards made by the Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force.

Among the Irish Guards decorated is a sergeant who, with a few men, held a post at a street corner in Boulogne for two hours, thus enabling his battalion to withdraw.

The sergeant is William John Gilchrist, who is awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

Gilchrist was in charge of an rik rifle, and although under machinegun fire he showed greatest contempt for danger and continued to keep the gun in action. He was instrumental in setting an enemy tank on fire, thus blocking the street, down which the enemy was trying to move.
