Anschluss Plebiscite

The result of the plebiscite held throughout Germany and Austria to decide whether the people approved of the absorption of the latter country into the German Reich is an amazing and overwhelming triumph for Herr Hitler and his party. The full figures for Germany corroborate that impression. The manner in which Austria has answered the question posed on the voting paper is the most emphatic endorsement: of the union, less than 10,000 out of a total of 4,283,712 voters declaring themselves opposed to the change which has been brought about. It is also clear from the German figures already available, that a similar result has been obtained in Germany. The contrary-minded are in. such a minute minority that to all intents and purposes the populations of the two countries are unanimous in their support of Der Fuehrer, and that in a plebiscite which Reuter says appears to have been absolutely secret. That view is supported by the fact that Herr Hitler and his followers conducted an extensive campaign right up to Sunday, involving a great deal of work which would have been unnecessary if the plebiscite were regarded as a mere formality in which the people would have to vote as they were told. That there are political differences in Germany has. been evidenced by recent past history, but on this question of the fusion of Germany and Austria into one state the Germanic peoples have spoken with no mistakable voice, and have surpassed the expectations of Herr Hitler and his followers, The plebiscite is one: of the most significant events in the history of continental Europe, and its general implications should not be ignored. Herr Hitler has, obviously, the whole of the German people behind him at least on this subject, and it is quite clear now that any attempt to have intervened in the matter would have been more than highly dangerous. It would also have been extremely unwise, for it would, if it had been successful, merely have thwarted what has now been proved to have been a very widely held desire in Austria for union with her more powerful neighbour.
