Fotlowing the heavy rains of Saturday night, Sunday and yesterday Shanghai became inundated in many parts yesterday as the downpour continued throughout the morning.
Among the chief places affected were the Cathay Mansions (seen top left) where flood water, over one foot in depth, overflowed into the building, coolies being employed to bale out with buckets; Avenue Joffre and Avenue Dubail (top right) where trams and cars splashed through deep water; Route Chapsal (bottom left) where many cars were marooned, and the Municipal Buildings in Avenue Joffre where entrance and exit was made extremely difficult, Danzig, July 3.
The people of Danzig were united to a man and wished to go back to the Reich, and they would go back, thundered Herr Albert Foerster, Nazi Gauleiter in Danzig, in an outspoken speech at a district party rally yesterday.
"They are prepared to make any sacrifice to this end," he added amid loud applause, "even to the extreme sacrifice of their lives."
The Gauleiter, who was repeatedly interrupted by wild applause, declared, in words addressed to Great Britain and her allies: "We stand firm.
We want to return to Germany, and we are going to return to Germany. One word of the Fuehrer's carries 10,000 times more weight with us than all war cries and lying provocation in the world. In Danzig no one need disturb himself—no measures by Poland can frighten Danzig.
"If the Fuehrer brings freedom to Danzig, then this German population stands together as one man in brazen loyalty to the Fuehrer and Germans, and it will be prepared for any sacrifices the Fuehrer demands—sacrifices not only of goods but of blood and life.
"The encirclement Powers are prepared, in opposition to: all their theories of self-determination, to go to war in order that Right may not be Right but remain for ever Wrong. They are ready to deliver Danzig to Poland rather than agree to the fulfilment of the desire of the solid Danzig population for a return to the Reich." Reuter.
