Intermediate Stage

"He'is just at the' intermediate stage," Sir Arthur said. He is between ihe small-brain and the modern-brain people. He has peculiarities never before seen in ape or man.

If the skull had not been found amid a good geological collection it might have been regarded as modern and lost. The skull was very thick, and in his opinion, it was that of a grown man. The problem it posed would exercise the British Association for the next 10 years.

All speakers in the discussion, which continued late into the day; agreed that the skull was as securely dated as any fossil we have; so the Swanscombe Man, London's earliest settler and the world's first homo sapient officially took his place in world history.
