Control Easily Regained

Jerusalem, Oct. 19.

British troops and police crushed the resistance of the Arab rebels in the Moslem quarter of the Old City today after they had smashed through the gates which had stood unbroken since Christ's time, Shortly after dawn the British troops seized the Old City in a perfect demonstration of a well-planned attack which wiped out the semblance of resistance.

Arab rebels fled to the Omar and Aksa mosques and the vicinity upon entry of the British forces.

British forces did not follow the rebels for they were not willing to desecrate the area by shelling it.

With the Old City completely taken over, the British troops patrolled the city's streets and occasionally made arrests.

The British forces marched confidently and walked through the Golden Gate, the Zion Gate and Damascus Gate toward the Mosque area, While they entered, aircraft flew overhead and dropped leaflets written in English, Arabic and Hebrew calling on the inhabitants to remain in their homes during the military operations.

Once through the Golden and Zion Gates, the troops proceeded slowly toward the mosque area because of a fear that there might be concealed land mines. Finding the Damascus and St. Stephen's Gates barricaded, they attacked and quickly. broke through. One Goldstream Guard and two constables were wounded.

Nine Arabs and one woman were wounded during the street fighting, the official casualty report said. Aviators of the R.A.F.. however, reported that they saw numerous wounded men taken in the mosques which the British troops carefully respected at all times, having been warned against entering the mosques.—United Press.
