One of the great disadvantages of self-propelled canal boats has always been that the wash from their propellers damages the canal embankments, Attempts to overcome this by the use of the Kort nozzle, lowering of speed and other means, have not been successful, and it is therefore with great interest that reports of a new type of canal barge have been received.
The Mannheimer Schiffs-und-Machinenbau A. G. has recently completed trials of a specially designed canal barge which will travel at nearly 8 m.p.h. without causing the slightest wash. The propelling machinery and screw of this vessel are situated forward, and the suction, combined with the Kort nozzle, propels the water along the sides of the craft leaving an entirely undisturbed wake.—Trans-Ocean.
