New York, Aug. 10.
There are not many people in the "United States who believe that any attack on the United States is imminent, should Hitler succeed in de-{eating Great Britain. Most of them think that it would be at least five years before the Germans could or would "try such a gigantic undertaking.
But Professor Harold C. Urey, director of chemistry at Columbia University, New York, and the discoverer of heavy water, thinks that the United States must face the possibility of a defensive war before the end of this summer, if Germany finishes up victorious over Britain.
He warned this in a statement made when he announced that 820 scientists had organized to further the objectives of the Committee to Defend America by Aiding The Allies.
"If Germany defeats Great Britai the war in western Europe is over, said Dr. Urey. "It is likely that Hitler will then be upon us rapidly, Striking by way of Iceland and Greenland and through Nazi penetration in South America. The defences of the Panama Canal will be attacked and the enemy may succeed in damaging it," he added.
Dr. Urey won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1934.—Reuter.
