Japanese flags flew from flag-poles and were waved in the air and from motor cars yesterday as the Shanghai Japanese community celebrated the fall of Hankow to Japanese troops in the early part of the week. The somewhat heavy rain of the afternoon dampened íhe enthusiasm to be abroad slightly.
Once again a pale yellow: balloon feated over the Japanese consulate, hoisting aloft a small "Rising Sun" flag and characters heralding the capture of the ¢ity. By a coincidence, celebration of another victory, the March on Rome, brought out the flags and bunting on "Battleship Row," off the Bund, and to some Chinese it may have looked as if the foreign warships were forsaking their neutral status to join in the Japanese celebrations.
All Japanese banks and business houses carried large "Rising Sun flags crossed over the- door-way, while flags of all sizes fluttered from bicycles, rickshaws and motor-cars.
