Chefoo, June 6.
Chinese guerillas, who have been active in the neighbourhood immediately surrounding Chefoo for some time, are growing more and more daring in their attacks.
On the night of May 31, when an attack by guerillas east of the town had drawn out a large section of the Japanese garrison, a band of some 400 guerillas launched an attack against Chefoo itself.
The Chinese troops, trained as a Peace Preservation Corps unit, were virtually all that were available to defend the town.
Exact details of what happened are not available, as the attack was launched during curfew hours, and xo foreigners were allowed to leave their houses.
It is known, however, that the guerillas broke through the Chinese Peace Preservation Corps troop: and were in temporary possession the city for several hours during the night In the early hours of the morning. the Japanese cruiser Huma brought her heavy guns into action, and began shelling the western outskirts of the town. Two other Japanese warships in harbour joined in the shelling. Firing continued for over an hour.
By dawn, the guerillas had Ketreated to the west, and the situation in the town returned to normal, To the east of Chefoo, where the original attack was launched, the situation remains obscure.
On May 30 and 31, seventeen truckloads of Japanese troops were sent out of the town in this direction to "mop up" the guerillas. By June 2, none of them had returned It is freely rumoured here that at least five truck loads have been attacked and destroyed, together with them complement of men, by the guerillas.—Reuter.
