Guns Heard Near Warsaw

The war was brought even closer to Warsaw yesterday when it was possible to hear artillery and machine-un fire outside the city. The location of the fighting was not divulged.

All roads south-east of the city were clogged with trate as the po-place staged an orderly evacuation, which was not general, however, because a great many of the masses still believed: their situation was secure.

Foremost among those evacuating Warsaw were people in the upper walks of life. Nothing had yet reach: ed the masses to make them really aware of the danger the city was in. Warsaw, under a brilliant sun, maintained a surprising aspect of normal ity as couples carrying gas masks strolled the sidewalks, and people chattered in a care-tree way.
