Goodwill of the States

As typical of the goodwill of the Indian States in providing the fullest possible economic support for the successful prosecution of the war. reference may be made to the address which was recently given by Sir Mirza Ismail, the Prime Minister. to the Representative Assembly of the State of Mysore, in which he dwelt on the need for Mysore to redouble its efforts to susi and help in every possible way the British stand against the Nazi wer machine. Incidentally, the economic resources of this progressive State are consider able, and its industrial progress in recent years has been greatly fostered by the development of its hydroelectric resources. Its products include steel, gold, paper, cement porcelain insulators, soap, sugar, coffee, tobacco, and granite, to mention but a few.

At first sight the success which India has achieved in tackling the problems of converting and expanding peace-time machinery for war needs at home and abroad appears surprising. It must be borne in mind however, that during the past 25 vers she has made great economic and industrial progress, while, in addition, her war effort has been based upon wholehearted ce-operation between Indian industry and the Government of India. Further, in the days of uneasy peace and growing danger the ground had been thoroughly explored; and the results of this preparatory work were seen in the immediate establishment of the War Supply Department—the parent of the Department of Supply—and the efficiency with which it met the call: made upon it. India's reserves of Taw material and labour are enorm ous, and recent months have shown how great is her/potential industrial capacity. At the same time it is as well to emphasize that in the development of her industrial resources consideration is being given to future prospects as well as present requirements. The Government of India has indeed made it clear that tariff policy will be so adjusted when conditions are again normal as to ensure reasonable prospects of continuity and prosperity for the new industries which have been established.
